Portable media devices, whether Ipods, portable gaming devices, phones with all their features, or whatever have solved what has been a generations old nuisance for all of us, boredom.
We have our little devices and now we are never bored. We dont find ourselves staring off into space unoccupied, wondering what to do. We dont find ourselves muttering about how bored we are sitting on the train, or on a plane, trying to do anything to make the time go by more quickly.
Our little mobile devices are so popular because they are the ultimate, continuous distraction. They are the easiest cure for boredom.
Quoted from Blog Maverick
Quite true, we'll never be bored, but at what cost I wonder.
Just think about it for a second. What do you do when you're on the road without your ipod, without your mobile phone or PDA or PSP? Your mind wonders. You reflect on recent events, think of the future, perhaps even dream a little. You imagine. You see an over-weight kid walking along, sweating, you think how good the segway would have been. Then you remember reading on the papers that segways are legally banned in the city. Is there any work-around? What's the government's motivation? What did it go so well in US but not in here? Then you remembering seeing an implementation of segway built with lego ...
You see the trend of though in that little example? Human beings are perfectly capable of distracting themselves with imagination. So with the proliferation of ipods and other portable media devices, what time do we have to exercise our mind? Think about it and you'll see a problem there.
The best thing to do, I find, is to allow yourself some isolation time. It's time when you're off the grid. You take a long bus ride without bringing all your electronic goodies. Be on the road without a destination for perhaps an hour or two, and just be with yourself.
I'll try that out this couple of days. Let's see how well it'll workout.
Keep day-dreaming everybody.
