unmarketed features

I was supprised to find that a lot of my friends didn't know about the engraving option available for ipods.
This is why in many people's mind, ipod's only good feature is style, and maybe the user interface. Ipods are around 20-30% more expensive than competing mp3 players, so it's not a surprising reaction to choose say the creative neon against the ipod mini. The way apple presented the ipods, they are all about the style.

It really isn't.

It's a weird watching Apple market the ipod. So many of its features have been ignored by the TV spots and magazine ads that it feels like the Apple marketing department didn't like what's inside the music player. Engraving service isn't featured on TV, Magazine, you don't even see the option until you clicked the "buy" button. A nice surprise, sure, but wouldn't it have driven some sales if you tell us beforehand?

And I've never seen any marketing time spent on the itunes music store integration, photo viewing, song rating system, album art, smart playlist setup, party shuffle ... not even in the online store, not really.

I don't get it. It's just like the Mac OS X situation. People know that Mac is there, but no one outside the circle of mac geek knows how good it is, and why.
